Have you ever felt exhausted but wired, like your body is constantly bracing for something—even when nothing is wrong? You’re not alone, and more importantly, you’re not crazy. Your nervous system may be stuck in a stress survival loop, leaving you in a constant state of fight-or-flight. But the good news is that your body isn’t broken, and you can rewire your nervous system to shift from stress to healing.
The Stress Loop: Why Your Body Is Always on High Alert
Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls your fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest responses. When it works properly, it shifts between these states as needed. However, chronic stress can cause your body to remain stuck in survival mode, preventing necessary rest and repair. This hidden stress cycle can show up in different ways, even in people who don’t consciously feel stressed.
Recognizing Hidden Stress
Many people don’t recognize they’re in a chronic stress state. For example, I had a patient with Alzheimer’s who insisted she had no stress in her life. Externally, she lived a comfortable life, but her family saw otherwise. Her internal stress manifested as hyper-vigilance and unresolved tension—factors that contribute to nervous system dysregulation over time.
Symptoms of hidden stress include:
-
Brain fog and lack of focus
-
Chronic muscle tension and headaches
-
TMJ issues and tinnitus
-
Poor digestion and bloating
-
Fatigue despite doing all the right things
-
Disrupted sleep, especially waking up with racing thoughts
-
Physical habits like jaw clenching, foot tapping, or pulling at hair
-
Chronic pain and inflammation
Your body may not register stress in the traditional sense, but if you experience any of these symptoms, your nervous system is likely in a dysregulated state.
How Modern Life Contributes to Nervous System Dysregulation
Modern life is filled with constant stimuli—notifications, alarms, emails, and endless demands on our attention. Our brains are overloaded with sensory input, contributing to chronic stress without us even realizing it. Consider how fast social media moves or how non-stop artificial lighting keeps us in a wired state. Even joyful experiences can become overwhelming when we don’t have time to recover between them.
How to Reset Your Nervous System
If you’ve realized that your body is stuck in stress mode, the next step is to start resetting your nervous system. Here’s how:
1. Engage Your Senses for Objectivity
Your brain processes an overwhelming amount of visual information, often trapping you in tunnel vision. Take a moment to engage your other senses:
-
Touch: Feel your feet against the floor or ground.
-
Sight: Look up at the sky and notice the colors.
-
Sound: Pay attention to distant sounds, like birds or wind.
-
Smell: Breathe in fresh air or essential oils.
2. Breathe with Intention
Breathing is one of the fastest ways to reset your nervous system. Try the exhale-first method to release tension before taking a deep breath in. This signals your body that it is safe to relax.
3. Connect to Your Muscles
When you’re in chronic stress mode, your muscles tighten. Take a moment to check in with your body:
-
Roll your shoulders.
-
Stretch your fingers.
-
Loosen your jaw.
-
Feel your heart rhythm and connect with your heartbeat.
4. Recognize and Break Habits of Stress
If you tap your foot constantly, clench your jaw, or chew the inside of your mouth, these are signs your nervous system is in distress. Awareness is the first step to changing these habits.
5. Reduce Overstimulation
Turn off unnecessary notifications, limit screen time, and create space for true rest. Even five minutes away from technology can make a difference.
Why Resetting Your Nervous System Matters
A dysregulated nervous system can lead to hormonal imbalances, metabolic dysfunction, chronic pain, and even autoimmune conditions. It impacts your digestion, energy levels, and emotional well-being. But the good news is that by taking intentional steps, you can break the stress loop and train your nervous system for resilience and healing.
